With all of the different types of entertainment and performance styles, there are still some commonly accepted perspectives on great acting. The Academy Awards recognize excellence in the field and Tony Awards place similar criteria on the skills of stage actors. Interestingly, a large percentage of television and film stars have strong roots on the stage, and even return to it, preferring that as their medium of choice, after having established a strong career and income for themselves in film. So, who are the greatest actors and actresses alive today? Does the list have to include only living actors or are icons like James Dean and Marlon Brando eligible. Certainly they are both incomparable. For the sake of manageability, the following lists will include only living actors that have reached a level of celebrity.

First we’ll look at the actresses. Automatically most people think of Meryl Streep when they’re asked to name their favorite actress. Her roles in Sophie’s Choice and Kramer vs Kramer introduced her as a beautiful powerhouse performer and recent roles like The Devil Wears Prada continue to show her amazing strength and versatility. Helen Mirren is another extremely well respected and iconic actress who enjoys something of a legendary status while still living and performing. Kate Winslet was the youngest person to earn six Academy Award nominations, and is considered to be in the prime of what will be one of the greatest acting careers. Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Johnny Depp has been respected for his unconventionally followed career, and has come to be regarded as one of the greatest living actors. Dustin Hoffman first gained acclaim and recognition in the 1960s in Mike Nichols’ The Graduate. His career has included amazingly diverse roles including his work in Rain Main and Tootsie. Brad Pitt is generally recognized as one of the top choices for great actors. Whether you intend to become an actor, or just enjoy them, you’ll want to have the perfect home decor for your Oscar parties. Using a Next Day Blinds coupon is one way to give your home some celebrity appeal.

Ringtones, Music and Personalized Cell Phones

19 Mar

Cell phones and all of their options, applications, games and multitude of other abilities have become an essential accessory to almost everyone over the age of ten, and oftentimes a little under that. And while everyone who owns a phone has their own special priorities and must-have features that they can’t do without there are a few common options that are favorites for a large portion of cell phone users.

Accessing the Internet has become one of the most popular features, particularly as the amount of entertainment and communication features provided by the Internet continues to increase. Text message alerts from Facebook and Twitter are popular and music downloads and ringtones are essential to almost any phone.

Downloading free ringtones to your personal cell phone is one of the favorite daily activities for many people as they access the Internet. One of the things this provides is the ability to have a different and unique song or sound associated with individual numbers and people in your phone book. And this is as important to many people as is having their picture pop up when they call. But you know your phone is completely personalized when you have your own favorite ringtone as your standard call response, and then personalized sounds and songs and photos for each of the people in your phone book.

Florida Has its Virgil

14 Aug

Every place needs to have its own Virgil. The mythic figure who lead Dante through the levels of heaven, hell, and purgatory, is one that has been inspirational to all poets and writers. Virgil exists as a kind of Apollonian counterpart to the muse, cutting the way through the path in order to find the golden fleece of lyrics and epic narration. It’s somewhat ironic, then, to find that the English Department at Florida State University has an award-winning writer on its faculty who serves in a similar capacity.

Virgil Suarez , who earned his MFA in 1987, has been tracking the human experience in fiction and in poetry. Lately, however, the muses of poetry have been speaking louder than the ones who like a good story, and this is where his focus currently lies. Born in Cuba, he articulates the experience of identity with a kind of precision and clarity than few other writers are able to even approach. It’s been a terrific journey so far, and his readers are always eager to find the new doorways he might encounter.

The experience of exile is one that informs all of his works, as it does for most people who come from that particular island. The memories of an old Havana find a powerful juxtaposition in the city views and luxury hotels Florida offers, and it gives a sense of being here and there all at once.

Las Vegas Bands: The Killers

15 Jun

With a pretty stunning number of NME Awards under their belts, along with the feather of proof from the BRIT Awards, it seems as though The Killers would be perfectly placed to win the Grammy. Why not? They’ve been nominated seven times, and are widely acknowledged as a group to contend with, and 15 million records sold worldwide might mean something. It’s not that popularity is any indicator of solid content, as the lessons of history continue to reveal, but there’s something here that’s kept us listening for a few years.

Hot Fuss was never the favorite for some of their more devoted fans, and although it laid the groundwork for some edgy moments, the moments were fleeting. That’s what hindsight says, anyway, and especially after the hindsight shows their next work in the rear view mirror. Sam’s Town was the one that made the world stop their pilates and take notice. It was recognized as enormously under-rated by an enormous number of people, which suggests only that maybe this was a bad year, and we were all too cheap to buy it, and made copies instead. This was dense work, though, and this is the stuff that was just hinted at when they were first trying to get signed. This is the level they were and are capable of, and it’s hard to know right now if this hiatus is going to lead to the dissolving, as these things often do.

If not, however, there are some interesting times ahead, because they’ve already shown that they know how to consider, reflect, and contemplate, and these things, like anything else, gets better with age and experience. It’s a long road from an old Nova to five star hotels. Vegas is strange about success, though, granting it only to the few who happen to know the right celebrity’s uncle, but. The Killers have escaped that, and found their way into the world through more honest means, drawing on the inspirations that were in the air when we were young.

La Lanne and the Santa Monica Pier

27 Feb

The Santa Monica Pier is definitely one of the places to go when you’re visiting Los Angeles.  It’s a spectacular way to get introduced to the beaches, which are some of the finest, or at least the most filmed beaches, in the world.  The legendary weather in Southern California is really all that it’s cracked up to be, and there are always plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the sunshine.  Warm days and cool nights is a regular thing here, making it as fantastic a tourist destination as it is a place to live.  Here’s a link for some great hotels, so you can stay in real style and panache, and enjoy all that there is to offer here.  One visit is not nearly enough, but it will certainly bring some calm into everyone’s world.

The Pier has a lot of very distinctive characters, you’ll notice.  Some of L.A.’s more colorful characters can be seen strolling here, as well as the usual assortment of rollerbladers and skaters, joggers, beach bunnies and bodybuilders.  You might recognize the icon of the bodybuilder here and think it’s somehow very familiar.  Jack La Lanne is one of the people responsible for this, and maybe in many ways the one who made the image popular, and even possible.

His story is a rather interesting one.  He was not a good kid when he was growing up, and once even tried to attack his brother with an axe.  He blames his juvenile delinquent behavior on the excessive sugar in his diet, and at a young age, he decided to try to turn his behavior around.  He adopted bodybuilding as a way to build character rather than simply an exercise in physical beauty.  At the time, the medical profession was advising against weightlifting, but he studied up on anatomy and health, looking especially at nutrition and its role in developing muscles.  Even now, the work is way ahead of its time, and the man himself is heading into his late 90s, and still appears to be in excellent health, in body and mind.  This kind of health is a California trademark.

Looking for Anything in Albany

12 Feb

I left very early in the morning to hop on the Amtrak train going from Montreal to Albany, New York. I knew it would be best to travel across the border this way to avoid being hassled and questioned excessively if I went by air. But, even on the train, when the conductor saw my passport stamps, he went through the litany of questions, which I answered calmly and honestly. One of the questions was where will I be staying while I visit Albany, and I told him that I booked a hotel in Albany from an internet site: and showed him a print out of my confirmation.

Once I arrived, it was late in the afternoon, so I took a taxi to my hotel, checked-in, dropped off my bags and went out to find some nightlife. I really needed to find some young people to talk to and to get some information about what were the best spots to party. But, I didn’t do well in this area, I mean, I did find some people my age to talk to, but they weren’t too helpful. I was beginning to think Albany might turn out to be boring and useless as cities go. I know it’s the capital of New York, but that doesn’t mean I should have a hard time finding Internet cafes! Some people I asked, didn’t even know if Albany had a public library! I walked for a few hours, and found myself in the train yard, Hmm…not exciting at all, so I ended back at my hotel room and stayed in for the evening.

The next morning and asked the front desk where’s the best place to go clubbing and where’s a good Internet cafe. She was extremely helpful and she gave me a walking map. I must admit though, Albany isn’t New York City, it’s the exact opposite.

Actors, Directors, Designers and Playwrights All Dream of Broadway

04 Feb

It is well known that many actors dream of starring on Broadway. In fact, it used to be a division factor in the acting profession. Performers would either dream of Hollywood or Broadway based on whether they were interested in film or theater. And while this distinction still exits, it is not as exclusive as it has been in the past. Frequently today’s young actors seek a career on both stage and in film. Historically actors who have made their living in film, but have their early experience and even a passion for the stage almost always returned to it after having been able to pay their bills. However, the cross over of film, television and theater has never been as easy and even applauded and sometimes expected as what it is today. Tourists in New York are frequently there to see a great show and look for great deals in resort accommodations as well as top Hollywood stars on the New York Stage.

What is less acknowledged though equally common is for theater designers, directors and playwrights to have the same dreams of Broadway as what is romantically assigned to the actors. And while the reality behind these dreams have also changed throughout the years the symbolic significance of a Broadway success continues to dominate young minds across the nation and even the world. Today’s writers frequently dabble in screenwriting, which similar to acting generally pays more than playwrighting. Film directors are known as some of the most respected and highest paid genre professions yet it is almost impossible to take a stage director away from the theatre. Regional theaters have also altered the course of not only play production but also theatre careers. There are numerous professional companies located throughout the nation that provide working opportunities for all theatre professions. In fact, for the standard playwright of today, it is more likely that they will make their career in regional theaters rather than on the Broadway stage, though that does nothing to dispel the early dreams and symbolic significance of the Great White Way.

007 in Malibu

13 Jan

We took a drive with our new car hire and headed out to Malibu for lunch at a restaurant that was recommended by all the foodies called Geoffrey’s. We arrived at a perfect time, right before the lunch crowd. We requested a table up front and with an ocean view. For starters, we orders oysters and champagne! What the heck; we were on vacation! The oysters were in season and very delicious, so much so, we had a second serving. We followed up with another starter, the tuna tar-tare and then for our main meal, a steak sandwich and a chicken sandwich. The restaurant filled up with all these beautiful people, but we didn’t see any celebrities.

On our way to see some famous Malibu hotels, we stopped for petrol and as we were just about to pull into the station, we noticed an Aston Martin coming in from the other direction, we gave way to the Aston Martin, because we wanted to gawk at it, it was a gorgeous car. We were wondering if it belonged to a celebrity, and it did! Pierce Brosnan stepped out of it and began pumping petrol! He was so handsome and imposing, but he wasn’t dressed up. We were too stunned and too Swiss to approach him for photo opportunity. We were total idiots! We didn’t even take photos of him from our car! Not one!

After our thrill of the moment, we took a tour of one of the hotels in Malibu near the Getty and  then we gained access to the Getty Villa; luckily, we were granted free entry to the villa. Then before it got dark, we headed off to Surfrider Beach in hopes to see some really good surfing, but there really weren’t that many surfers, I figured they must all be at their jobs. We hated leaving Malibu, but it was time for us to drive up the coast to San Francisco.
