Legal Dramas Seem to be Favored

21 Jul

Some of the most popular television shows are legal dramas. People seem to be fascinated with the American legal system and as a result, shows such as Law and Order have become a phenomenon which has lasted for years. Over the years, there have been many shows about the legal system and the networks seem to be creating new ones all the time.

One of the most popular and longest running dramas is Law and Order. Originally created by Dick Wolf, the show is tied with Gunsmoke as the longest running television show. The show aired for 20 seasons and portrayed law offices in a new way. In Law and Order, the prosecutor is portrayed as the hero as opposed to the defense. The show was revolutionary in many ways and it opened an entire portal of new shows based on the Law and Order brand.

Some of the spin off shows are Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and Law and Order: LA. All of these shows are currently airing on television and all have become very popular and each has a large fan base. The success of many of the shows has to do with the location that the show is set in.

L.A. Law was a huge hit because it portrayed a law firm that was exciting, smart, driven and had sex appeal. The show was an older one and ran from 1986 to 1994. The show featured not only the court room but the personal lives of the characters as well. A large part of the show’s success was that it was set in Los Angeles. LA has the reputation of a young, vibrant, and thrilling city and it is no wonder that a drama would spark interest in the area. Law firms in LA such as, Snell & Wilmer Los Angeles law have benefitted from the increased interest in the city as well as the legal field.

Television shows are a major part of American culture, people are enrapt in the television world and it comes as no surprise that the legal field would be a popular topic for a show.

DUI Testing in Maryland Comes in Many Forms

19 Jun

Each state has their own standards for collecting evidence in DUI or DWI cases. For instance, in Maryland, a breath test is used to determine alcohol content while a blood test is used to determine if there are drugs or other illegal substances present in a driver’s body. Other states include urine and saliva testing as alternative options. Drivers should be aware of both the type of testing allowed and the minimum standards to be considered drunk or under the influence.

Law enforcement in Maryland can request that a suspect submit to a preliminary breath test. These results are not supposed to be used against the driver in court. They are used by the police officer in determining whether to arrest the individual and subject them to further chemical tests. Only these later tests will be used as evidence. However, refusing to submit to chemical testing can be used as evidence in court.

The rules surrounding the collection of this chemical evidence is complicated. It can take a Howard Maryland DUI attorney or judge to really understand the nuances of the law. There are regulations about which officials are certified to conduct which tests and under which circumstances each test may be administered. There are even statements that must be made to the accused, such as informing them of the purpose of the test and their legal right to decline to submit to testing. Drivers are also entitled to get independent tests from qualified physicians or personnel. While the legal limit is a BAC of .05, there are many circumstances which can raise or lower that limit, making it even more complicated for the lay person to understand.

Dealing with an Auto Accident

30 Apr

The repercussions of an auto accident come in phases. Drivers and passengers may experience immediate injuries and property damage that has to be addressed on site. People may need medical treatment and vehicles may need to be towed away from the scene. Even in minor collisions, reports will need to be filed with the authorities and insurance information exchanged between drivers.

It may take several days for other consequences to arise. Certain injuries to the back and neck as well as joints and muscles may not be felt in the initial aftermath of the accident. Individuals suffering from pain or physical difficulties following an accident should seek medical diagnosis and treatment as soon as they recognize the symptoms. These injuries may become part of an auto accident claim , entitling the injured party to financial settlement, either under their insurance policy or from the driver of the car that caused the accident.

Claims can take weeks or months to settle. This is partly due to the bureaucratic process of gathering reports, statements, and other documents. If there is any dispute about who was at fault in the accident, it may take even longer. Cases involving impaired drivers , such as those under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or where the driver did not have adequate insurance may end up in court for final judgment regarding liability and the extent of financial damages.
