Advantages of Custom Order Blinds

23 Sep

Who doesn’t love windows? They provide natural light and allow us to enjoy breathtaking views. Without windows our homes would be dark and cheerless places.

As wonderful as windows are, there are times when we need them to be closed for privacy and security reasons. The question then becomes, what to do with the windows?
It may seem simpler to just go to a local store and buy some basic blinds ; however, there is another option. Factory direct blinds provide many options that stock blinds do not.

When you custom order your blinds the first thing they will do is measure the windows to ensure that your new blinds will be a perfect fit –no finagling or adjusting to make them work. Second, you can order exactly what you want to fit your style, budget, and needs. They come in a variety of materials –fabric, wood, vinyl–as well as varying thickness so that you can decide how much light you want to come in. There are also some that reduce the amount of hot or cold air that is allowed in; helping to reduce your electric bill .

No matter where you go, blinds are not cheap. To make sure you are getting exactly what you want and exactly what you paid for, the best choice is to custom order.

Finding a Worthwhile Internship

21 Sep

In today’s job market completing an internship is not just a nice idea or a little cushion for your resume. Completing an internship and having at least some work experience is pretty much a requirement in many fields. Even though there are many thousands of internships out there, with so many students applying it can be hard to find the right one. There are a few qualities that set some internships apart and make them worth your time.

There is a big debate between paid and unpaid internships . Although it may be one of your requirements, it can be hard to pay the bills if you don’t have a paying job or someone to support you, however it usually isn’t a determining factor in the quality of the internship. There are some good internships that are unpaid and some that are paid. One example of an internship that allows you to determine your pay by how much you work is Southwestern Company. News releases recently stated that some companies were having students pay for internships and that is probably not the best route for getting an internship.

A lot of the quality of the internship will be based on you, what you are looking to get out of it. If you are looking to really get some work and job experience, not just do menial tasks like making coffee then you need to make that clear at the interview. That is the best time to make sure you understand their expectations and vice versa. You can also research the company online and through social networking sites like the Southwestern Company twitter account.

Taking the time to find the right internship will not only benefit you now — it’s much easier to go if you enjoy what you are doing — but it will also help you get a good job later.

Helping Our Schools

19 Sep

The US educational system has been struggling for years. For decades the news has included report after report of falling test scores, rising violence, and severely underfunded classrooms. While wide-scale change is in the realm of politicians, lawmakers, and lobbyists, there are little things that individuals can do to help their local schools.

One of the most visible ways of helping your community schools is evident when you go shopping. More and more retail stores and grocery chains are offering some sort of receipt program. These partnerships with local and national retailers provide a donation tied to the amount of your purchase. Some require that you put your receipt in a jar or box and write the name of the school or district you wish to benefit or to visit a website and sign in with a code on the receipt before indicating the beneficiary. Tens of millions of dollars have been donated to schools across the country using programs like this.

Charities exist with the specific goal of saving arts and/or music programs in schools . Donations to these organizations result in the purchase of musical instruments, art supplies, or funding of teachers and programs. You can also take a more direct approach and purchase items yourself to give to a teacher or school in your neighborhood. Some items that are always in need are world map s, copy paper, display materials, art supplies, globes , and current periodical subscriptions.

The Rocks Discovery Museum in Sydney

13 Sep

What are the Rocks? Anywhere else in the world, these two words would suggest not much more than the stones in a desert yard, but in Australia, specifically Sydney, the Rocks has a much more significant meaning. Here, the Rocks are an historic area at the center of the city, found on the southern shores of Sydney Harbor. The area is bordered by the Bradfield Highway, which leads to the grand Sydney Harbour Bridge, and by Dawes Point and Miller’s Point in the west. It’s adjacent to Circular Quay which is on Sydney Cove and is the site of Australia’s European settlement, which was established in 1788.

If you find yourself overnight at Sydney hotels , with a little time on your hands, you’ll want to check out this area of Sydney, first by exploring the area museums and, if you happen to arrive in October, by attending the Darling Harbour Fiesta. The fiesta is a free event, which includes 30 bands, 45 dance groups, 15 dance classes, all in the space of three days and three nights. Around the same time you’ll also experience, the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, the Burma Food and Cultural Festival, as well as the Darling Harbour Photo competition.

The Rocks Discovery Museum is a free family exhibition that provides a detailed history of the area. The fact that many of the buildings are historic here, and the fact that it’s close to the Circular Quay with views of the Harbour Bridge, make the site popular with visitors. Places such as The Rocks Market , operating each week with a 100 stalls, and its many souvenir and craft shops, not to mention historic pubs, also provides a strong draw, a must-see destination for anyone new to Australia.
